Getting Started with PocketRadar and Ballclubz
When you use PocketRadar with Ballclubz, pitch speeds will automatically get added to your scoring data, and your video feed if you are broadcasting.
Step 1: Hardware needed
In addition to someone keeping score on Ballclubz (and optionally streaming video on Ballclubz), to capture radar you need to have:
- A PocketRadar Smart Coach Radar. (Learn More)
- An compatible and internet connected (cell data or WiFi) smart device with iOS 15.8 or Android 10.0 or greater.
- A tripod or fence mount (optional, but if not your arm will get tired!)
- An external battery and MicroUSB cable (or a lot of AAA batteries to get you through a game)
Step 2: Pocket Radar Sports App
The device that will connect to the radar needs to install the Pocket Radar Sports app available in the Apple App Store or Google Play Store
- Download Pocket Radar Sports
- Create a free account using the same email address you use for Ballclubz (if for any reason you use a different one, support will have to help you link things separately)
- You will need a Pocket Radar Plus Subscription (paid).
IMPORTANT: This subscription is connected to the smart device account, so whoever subscribes to the service needs to be the owner of the device connecting to the PocketRadar. Anybody can keep score or stream, you can connect to another person's radar, but the device connecting to the radar has to have the active subscription. - In the Pocket Radar Sports App, click More, then Manage Connections, and click Ballclubz in the list to connect. If the accounts use the same email address things will be nearly instant and automatic, but if not we can help.
Step 3: Gameday Setup
On gameday, you will set things up at the ballpark
- Mount your Pocket Radar Smart Coach on a tripod or fence clip behind home plate. The more directly behind the better the readings, but a few feet to either side is okay.
- Connect your external battery if possible to ensure you have power for an entire game.
- Open the Pocket Radar Sports and click Add New Session. If your radar is not already paired and connected, follow the on screen instructions to do so.
- Click START SESSION to start capturing readings.
- You can configure session settings however you want, but we recommend disabling speed announcement, and setting the speed range to slower than the slowest pitch to faster than the fastest pitch you could expect. Ballclubz does some special things to exclude catcher throw backs and exit velocities, and learn each pitcher, so for example for a high school game you might choose 55-99, and for a youth game you might pick 45-75.
Step 4: Ballclubz Scoring
The Ballclubz scorekeeper will click the Pocket Radar logo in the app, and click Radar Connect if a valid radar is linked to their Ballclubz account, or another authorize Ballclubz team member or parent is connected and has their radar set up.
As each reading is received, the Ballclubz Pocket Radar display will show the reading, and the latest reading will be attached to the next pitch scored automatically.
